So you booked your session. Now the panic sets in.
Will the kids cooperate? Will everyone look awkward? Will my toddler sprint directly into a river the second I take my eyes off her? Take a breath. I've got you and I'm here to tell you that almost everything you're worried about? Doesn't actually matter.
First things first: it's going to feel awkward. That's completely normal.
I tell every single family this the moment they show up. Standing in front of a camera with someone you just met, trying to look natural while absolutely nothing feels natural — that's just how it starts. Every time. For everyone.
My job is to get you out of that feeling as fast as possible. We'll crack some jokes, I'll tell you how amazing you look (because you do), and I'll even teach you how to squat into position without looking like you're taking a poo. Yes, that's a real thing I teach. Yes, it helps. Yes, we will laugh about it. By the time we're wrapping up, if you're not relaxed and laughing, then I didn't do my job right. Simple as that.
You do not need well-behaved kids.
This is the number one thing families stress about before their session and I need you to hear me: I do not need your kids to behave. I need them to show up exactly as they are. Wild, distracted, obsessed with bugs, running in the opposite direction, eating grass. Whatever their thing is, bring it. Some of the best shots I've ever taken
happened while chasing a toddler across a field or getting down on the ground to watch a kid explore something totally unrelated to the session.
Kids who are forced into behaving look like they're being held hostage. Kids who are comfortable and being themselves? Those are the photos you're going to cry over in ten years. So please, let them be feral. I'll keep up.
Here's what a session actually looks like:
We meet at our location in the evening. I'm strictly a golden hour photographer because Idaho light during the day is brutal and the evening light is everything. We'll spend the first few minutes just getting comfortable, walking around, letting the kids adjust to the new environment and the new person with the big camera.
From there I'll guide you through different groupings and moments. Some of it will feel posed, most of it won't. I'll prompt you to interact with each other. Hug it out, chase the kids, tickle somebody. Genuine moments always look better than manufactured ones.
And here's my favorite part: when something looks really, really good, I will literally yank my camera off my neck and show you on the spot. "LOOK AT HOW GOOD YOU LOOK." Because you deserve to know in the moment, not just when your gallery lands in your inbox.
By the time you're driving home:
I want you to feel like that was genuinely fun. More painless than you expected. And I want you to be replaying moments in your head on the drive home, already excited for photos you haven't even seen yet.
That's the goal every single time. Not perfect. Not forced. Not stressful. Just your family, exactly as you are, caught on camera by someone who actually loves doing this.
